The Chessboard of 2027: Unpacking the Machakos Gubernatorial Election's Early Moves.
The Chessboard of 2027: Unpacking the Machakos Gubernatorial Election's Early Moves.
Machakos County, a vibrant hub in Kenya's lower Eastern region, is already a simmering pot of political intrigue, even with the 2027 gubernatorial elections still a significant distance away. The recent public outcry by incumbent Governor Wavinya Ndeti regarding alleged interference in the County Assembly by prominent political figures – including her predecessor, CS Dr. Alfred Mutua, along with MPs Hon. Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Hon. Caleb Mule (Machakos Town), and Hon. Patrick Makau (Mavoko) – is not just a local skirmish; it's a telling glimpse into the high-stakes game already underway for Machakos's top seat.
Governor Ndeti's concerns stem from a reported standoff between MCAs loyal to her and those aligned with the embattled County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Ann Kiusya, amid efforts to impeach the latter. While the Governor sees this as external meddling, a deeper analysis reveals a complex web of alliances, ambitions, and potentially broken promises that could define the next electoral cycle.
Her Excellency Wavinya
Ndeti, a seasoned politician with the backing of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo
Musyoka, will undoubtedly seek re-election. However, the path ahead appears
anything but a "walk in the park." Despite the undeniable strength of
the Wiper party in Ukambani, Governor Ndeti's tenure has been met with mixed
reviews, with some quarters pointing to a "dismal and much to be desired
performance." While a recent survey by Microtrak Africa in September 2024
ranked her as the best-performing governor in Kenya, garnering a 78% approval,
citing improvements in health, empowerment, and finance, the on-the-ground
sentiment among some constituents, as suggested by the ongoing political
turbulence, seems to be a different tune.
Her former closest
challenger, Nzioka Waita, the urbane ex-Chief of Staff to former President
Uhuru Kenyatta, appears to have lost some of his initial appeal. His
sophistication, while an asset in some circles, reportedly struggles to
resonate with the largely rural-based voters across Machakos County, suggesting
that a purely technocratic approach might not be enough to sway the electorate.
The mention of Mavoko,
Machakos Town, and Mwala constituencies as the most populous and influential in
the county is crucial. This is where the political machinations become
particularly interesting, especially concerning Mavoko MP, Hon. Patrick Makau.
Reports suggest that in
the lead-up to the 2022 elections, Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka personally intervened
to persuade Makau, who had mounted a formidable challenge for the Wiper
gubernatorial nomination, to step aside for Wavinya Ndeti. The alleged
agreement involved Makau securing the Mavoko MP seat, a nomination as a Commissioner
in the Parliamentary Service Commission (a highly coveted position), a rumoured
KES 10 million compensation for his campaign expenses, and a crucial
understanding: Wavinya Ndeti would serve a single term, paving the way for
Makau to receive the Wiper nomination in 2027.
However, recent events
suggest these agreements are now "water under the bridge." Hon.
Makau's recent lambasting by both Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka during a
joint rally, for his perceived support of Gachagua's impeachment motion, points
to a clear fracturing of trust and a potential excommunication from the Wiper
inner circle. The public castigation essentially painted him as an
"outsider" within the Wiper Democratic Movement Party.
This development has
seemingly pushed Hon. Makau into a desperate scramble for new alliances. His
reported attempts to secure an appointment with President William Ruto, and the
subsequent cold feet he developed, opting instead for a meeting with Kalonzo
Musyoka, indicate a man caught between a rock and a hard place. The speculation
that he might have been "conned into submission" by Musyoka during
that meeting suggests a powerful play by the Wiper leader to maintain control
and prevent a strategic defection.
The current political
maneuvering highlights a critical juncture for Machakos County. The incumbent
governor's attempts to impeach the Assembly Speaker, viewed by some as an
authoritarian move, might indeed be "digging a deep hole" for her
re-election bid. With the three most populous constituencies seemingly rallying
against her, her reliance solely on the Wiper party leader's endorsement might
prove insufficient.
For Hon. Patrick Makau,
the message is clear: continued allegiance to Kalonzo Musyoka, especially after
the public rebukes, could be a political "hangman's noose." His
strategic future lies in breaking free from the "hangover of Wiper
party." The suggestion that he should "move with speed" and align
with Hon. Caleb Mule (Machakos Town) and Hon. Vincent Musyoka (Mwala),
potentially drawing support from Masinga and Yatta constituencies, presents a
compelling alternative path to the Machakos "White House." This new
alignment, leveraging the considerable voter bases of these constituencies,
could form a powerful bloc capable of challenging the Wiper party's traditional
dominance in the county.
The 2027 Machakos
gubernatorial race is shaping up to be a fierce contest, defined not just by
party affiliations, but by evolving alliances, perceived performance, and the
strategic positioning of key political figures. As the county gears up for
another electoral battle, the fluidity of these political dynamics will
undoubtedly make for a fascinating and unpredictable journey.
