Rigathi Gachagua: A Clear and Present Danger to Kenya's Future

Unmasking a Leader Unfit for Kenya

Kenyans, we stand at a perilous juncture. The recent Obinna interview with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua served not as a platform for leadership, but as a chilling exposé of a man whose character and track record should disqualify him from holding the highest office in our land. His words, coupled with a history marred by troubling incidents, paint a portrait of a leader dangerously unsuited to guide our nation.

The Obinna Interview: A Symphony of Ineptitude

The Obinna interview offered a stark display of Gachagua's unsuitability. Several key moments revealed deep flaws:

 1. Divisive Rhetoric: Gachagua's language was laced with divisive undertones, consistently framing issues as "us versus them." This tribalistic approach, reminiscent of a dark chapter in our history, threatens to fracture the fragile unity we've worked so hard to build. For example, his constant reference to specific communities and their perceived grievances, rather than addressing national concerns, is a dangerous tactic.  A leader who has the temerity to describe the bloody chaos of 2007 as Christmas and prophesy that in 2027 it will be bloodier, should be avoided like plague. This is a matter that should be taken over by agencies of law and proper investigations conducted.

 2. Economic Incoherence: His pronouncements on the economy were riddled with inaccuracies and simplistic solutions. Gachagua demonstrated a fundamental misunderstanding of economic principles, offering populist soundbites instead of viable strategies. His statements on the state of economy reveal a level of economic illiteracy that could lead Kenya to financial ruin.

 3.  Disregard for the Rule of Law: Gachagua's responses to questions about governance revealed a disturbing tendency to prioritize personal power over the rule of law. His casual dismissal of constitutional safeguards and his apparent belief that he is above reproach should send shivers down the spine of every Kenyan who values justice and accountability.

Beyond the Interview: A Troubling History

The Obinna interview is not an isolated incident. It reflects a pattern of behaviour that stretches back decades:

 1. The Iron Fist of a Student Leader: Gachagua's time as a student at the University of Nairobi was marked by his alleged role in suppressing dissent within the student body. He was accused of using his position to silence opposing voices, a chilling foreshadowing of his later intolerance. As a student he acted as a spy who would occasionally pass information to Moi’s statehouse and the then dreaded special branch unit. His tribal manoeuvres were well honed during his university days where he would mobilize students from his Nyeri district to go for handouts at the state house. He would occasionally accompany president Daniel Arap Moi for oversees trip as part of the debriefing exercise. Many student leaders were detained or their education discontinued courtesy of Gachagua’s gossip.

 2. The Oppressive District Officer: His tenure as a District Officer was reportedly characterized by high-handedness and a disregard for human rights. Accounts from that time suggest a man who wielded power with impunity, intimidating and oppressing those under his authority. He was a KANU operative who was involved in a myriad of undemocratic tendencies as he sought to advance the ideals of the oppressive KANU regime. His engagement in Limuru with Kuria Kanyangi, whose name spelt doom to those agitating for democracy during the clamour for freedom and more political and economic space is part of his resume. He had a stint at Molo where history is littered with his supposed role in the bloody Molo land clashes. This history of abuse of power is deeply concerning.

 3. Questions of Integrity: Allegations of mishandling his late brother's estate further tarnish his image. These accusations, which involve mismanagement of his late brother’s estate, corruption scandals that led to the freezing of his accounts in 2021, Kenyans were treated to an unfortunate incidence of his manipulation and undue influence in the awarding of KEMSA tenders and many others raise serious questions about his integrity and his ability to manage public resources responsibly.

 4. Divisive Deputy Presidency and Impeachment Attempts: His time as Deputy President has been marred by a divisive approach to leadership, culminating into his impeachment. His actions, including his tribal epithets, shareholding slur, and many others demonstrated a pattern of behaviour that alienated key political figures and threatened national stability.

5. The launch for Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is a classic example of  a man whose main objective is to encapsulate what Rigathi Gachagua describes as “Mrima” into a cocoon of his political control. Over a dozen times the former Deputy President has promised to create a party for the people of Mount Kenya. This is a party whose main objective is to deny William Ruto a second term in 2027.

Kenya's Choice: A Path to Peril or Progress

Kenyans, the evidence is overwhelming. Rigathi Gachagua has demonstrated, through his words and his actions, that he is a dangerous person to lead our country. His divisive rhetoric, his economic ineptitude, his disregard for the rule of law, and his troubling history all point to a man who is unfit to hold the highest office.

We must not be blinded by political expediency or tribal loyalties. The future of Kenya depends on our ability to recognize the danger before us and to choose a different path – a path of unity, progress, and responsible leadership. Let us not allow ourselves to be led astray.
