UDA's Kawaya Blasts 'Rudderless' MPs Over Censure Threats Against Health CS Duale
In a powerful display of political solidarity and a staunch defense of the government's anti-corruption agenda, Mwala Member of Parliament and UDA's Organizing Secretary, Hon. Eng. Vincent Musyoka-Kawaya, delivered a fiery address in Kitui East constituency. The tour, a part of his ongoing efforts to connect with constituents across the Ukambani region and articulate the government's development plan, took a decisive turn as Hon. Kawaya took a direct and unambiguous swipe at a group of legislators threatening to censure and impeach the Health Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Aden Duale.
Hon. Kawaya's remarks come amid a political storm brewing around the Health Ministry and the newly-formed Social Health Authority (SHA). A caucus of young, opposition-leaning lawmakers, dubbed "Kenya Moja," has been vocal in its demand for the Health CS to resign, accusing him of negligence and complicity in a multi-billion-shilling fraud at the former National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). The group has threatened to table a motion to impeach Duale, escalating the political tensions.
However, Hon.
Kawaya, a key figure in the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), dismissed
the threats as a politically motivated distraction. He expressed dismay that at
a time when the Health Ministry, under Duale's leadership, is actively working
to dismantle powerful and entrenched cartels at Afya House, a group of
"attention seekers" is busy pursuing "political expediency"
in the name of impeaching the CS. He questioned the timing and sincerity of the
motion, arguing that it is a clear attempt to frustrate genuine reforms.
The Mwala MP,
known for his keen interest in the advancement of healthcare, was particularly
passionate in his defense of the transition from NHIF to SHA. He cited numerous
examples of fraudulent claims and fictitious medical refunds that plagued the
NHIF, noting that the systemic corruption was the very reason that informed the
government's decision to usher in the new SHA.
"We all know
the history of NHIF," Hon. Kawaya stated to a cheering crowd. "It was
a den of corruption. Payments were made to 'ghost' hospitals and billions of
shillings were siphoned from the public coffers. The fight against this rot is
not for the faint-hearted. It is a war, and as we have seen, corruption fights
back."
He pointed out
that the threats to impeach CS Duale were not a fight for justice, but rather a
desperate attempt by those who benefited from the fraudulent schemes to derail
the reform process. He argued that the "all-out war" being waged
against Duale and the SHA is a direct consequence of the CS's unwavering
resolve to clean up the sector.
"Hon. Duale
is doing the good work. He is dismantling the very cartels that these people
represent," Hon. Kawaya declared. He went on to urge the Health CS to
remain steadfast and continue with the good work at Afya House, assuring him of
the support of the UDA party and the majority of lawmakers who are committed to
fighting corruption and ensuring Kenyans get value for their money in
healthcare.
Hon. Kawaya did
not mince his words, daring the Kenya Moja caucus to follow through on their
threats. "Let them bring their motion to the floor of the House," he
challenged. "We will meet them there, and I promise them a humbling
defeat. This is not a political game. This is about the health and well-being
of Kenyans, and we will not allow a few individuals to sabotage these critical
reforms for their own selfish interests."
The Mwala MP's
powerful message in Kitui East underscores a growing rift within the political
class regarding the ongoing healthcare reforms, positioning the UDA party
firmly behind its Cabinet Secretary and against what it views as a politically
motivated attack on the government's anti-corruption crusade.
