An Outlandish Exhibition of Callousness: Governor Kahiga's Unacceptable Low
The recent outburst by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has transcended the boundaries of political rhetoric and plunged straight into the territory of the utterly contemptible. It was a moment of uncalled-for malice, a brazen and outlandish exhibition that unmasks a profoundly callous nature unworthy of a public servant. This is not just a lapse in judgment; it is a systemic failure of humanity and a demonstration of the kind of outrageous, mediocre behaviour that Kenyans must condemn without reservation.
Mutahi Kahiga-Governor of Nyeri CountyIn a democratic society,
political rivalry is a crucible for ideas, a vigorous contest of policies and
visions. It should never be permitted to degenerate into the callous, spiteful
statements that Governor Kahiga has consistently delivered. His most recent
remarks show an absolute and stunning lack of human empathy.
A leader's character is
revealed not just in times of triumph, but in moments of pressure and
disagreement. For a Governor—a representative of the people—to stoop to such a
base level shows a profound failure to grasp the solemn responsibility
entrusted to him. We are not merely talking about a difference in political
opinion; we are witnessing a public display of an ego unchained by decency.
This pattern of behaviour
is, sadly, not new. Who can forget the lead-up to the 2022 General Election, at
an event in Nyeri, where the Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga delivered his
hallmark speech—a crucial political and historical perspective on the Mau Mau
revolution and the fight for independence? Governor Kahiga, in his usual
cantankerous manner, dismissed this essential historical context as
"unnecessary." Such an attitude betrays a leader who is either
dangerously myopic or deliberately dismissive of the deep, historical
consciousness that underpins our nation.
Governor Mutahi Kahiga
must be held to account. The time for political posturing is over; it is time
for personal and political responsibility. Just as he recently felt compelled
to resign as the Vice-Chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG), citing
political expediency or internal pressures, he must now do the right thing for
the people of Nyeri County and the dignity of the country: he should resign as
Governor.
Leaders of such
consistently demonstrated mediocrity and offensive behaviour should be
vigorously called out and forced to take responsibility for the erosion of
public trust they cause. His actions have demonstrated that he is unfit to hold
the reins of Nyeri County, a region with a deep and proud history that deserves
a statesman, not an antagonist.
Equally disappointing,
and bordering on the disgustful, is the lukewarm, deflective response from a
section of the opposition stalwarts. To assert that Governor Kahiga is simply a
"UDA member" and leave it at that is the utmost form of play and a
demonstration of mediocre politics that shortchanges the Kenyan public.
This kind of political
posturing is insulting to the intelligence of Kenyans. It is an open secret
that Mutahi Kahiga’s political identity is not tethered to the core ideals of
the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Rather, his allegiance and
political machinery are known to be at the beck and call of the impeached
former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua. The United Opposition and the
Democratic Congress Party (DCP) know this truth better than anyone.
For political leaders to
willfully mislead the public by oversimplifying a deep-seated political rivalry
into a mere party affiliation is to treat Kenyans with utter contempt. It is
high time our political class demonstrates the respect due to the citizenry by
speaking with honesty and confronting complex political realities head-on.
The gravity of this
matter calls for firm action from independent bodies. We urge the National
Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to pursue this matter with a firm
grip and see it to its logical conclusion. The boundaries of civil discourse
must be policed, and those who breach them must face the legal and
administrative consequences.
Furthermore, we must
implore the opposition to rise above the temptation of playing the "tribal
bigotry" card. This moment is not about scoring cheap political points
along ethnic lines; it is about upholding human dignity. Let us act with the
magnanimity and statesmanship consistently demonstrated by the Right Honourable
Raila Amollo Odinga.
To ODM leaders,
especially the Chairperson, Governor Gladys Wanga: exercise the highest levels
of restraint and understand the magnitude of your position. You hold the baton
to continue a legacy of national dialogue and principled opposition. We should
all remember the wise and powerful words of former United States First Lady,
Michelle Obama: "When they go low, we go higher."
Let the response to
Governor Kahiga’s callousness be one of educated, principled condemnation,
focusing on the failure of leadership and the violation of civil ethics, not on
partisan or tribal mudslinging. This is the only way to build confidence among
the electorate and demand a higher standard of governance.
